Our goal was to spend the day enjoying the Row River Trail on our tandem bicycle. Salem was encased in fog when we left home, and continued to dampen our enthusiasm through Eugene, but by the time we arrived in Cottage Grove we had a beautiful sunny fall day. A stop at the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce netted a map of the trail and some directions to the downtown starting point off of Main Street.

We found the paved surface and gentle grade of the old railroad bed a delight to ride on. Falling leaves were strewn across the path and picturesque old bridges spanned several of the rivers and creeks.

The trail took us up around Dorena Lake and further up the Row River before coming to an end at the Culp Creek Park, where we turned the tandem around and reversed our route back to Cottage Grove.

Dorena Lake itself was quiet of its busy summer activities, its barren banks showing, as the lake shrank to prepare for spring freshets.
