Date: July 17, 2008 | Location Crabtree Lake Fishing | Where: Linn County | Thursday was the next day Tyler and I both had off from Roaring River Hatchery, and after considering a number of lakes to fish, we settled on Crabtree Lake. The last time I was at the lake was 35 years ago, and I drove up the Snow Peak Main Line directly to the lake, but now with Weyerhaeuser locked access gates, it is necessary to go clear around and drive in from Quartzville Creek.
| | Tyler conquering a snow drift Crabtree Lake at 3500 feet, lies low enough to be free of snow by now, but to get there you must drive over ridges of 4200 feet and we found these to still be plagued with snow drifts.
| | Jim at the lake Although BLM shows the hike to the lake to be seven tenths of a mile, the concrete barrier has been moved closer to the lake, and my GPS showed a quarter of a mile of travel.
| | Jim with Rainbows There were no rises on the surface to indicate feeding fish, so I elected to go deep and fish a weighted damsel fly nymph imitation on a sinking wet line. I was rewarded with five fat rainbows up to 13 inches. |
