Location  Lower Metolius Hike

Where:  Deschutes National Forest

For our second day of hiking, I wanted to inventory the backpacking campsites on the East side below Bridge 99 by entering in them into my GPS. This area beyond the bridge has been a favorite area of mine to backpack in for a number of years, particularly early in the season when the snow still clings to the higher elevations of the cascades.

The first two miles down river from Bridge 99 provides a park like setting and contains an unbelievable number of campsites. I made waypoints on my GPS of over ten campsites, some so large I would call them camping 'areas'.

Jim at the gate

This is a pristine camping area, and the reason is, the locked gate on Forest Service Road #1499. This gate has kept people from driving in and making informal car camping sites as they did in earlier years. Its been cleaned up from the left over garbage and now makes for wonderful backpacking campsites.

After lunch we crossed over and explored the West Metolius Trail from Bridge 99 down to Candle Creek Campground, which provided many good vistas of the Metolius River.

Then it was back to our motorhome at Camp Sherman Campground for hot showers, cold beverages, and relaxation.
