Location  Chemeketan Trail Maintenance

Where:  Independence Rock Trail

So many people showed up for the Chemeketan Trail Maintenance that we split up into three groups. A large group went to work on the Newport Drive Trail, a medium sized group went to work of the Little North Fork Trail, and a small group went to work on the Independence Rock Trail. Ed Myers headed up this small group and accompanying him were Virginia Metheny, George Struble and myself. Independence Rock is located near Marion Forks, and with perfect weather we had a very pleasant drive and spent our day removing winter windfalls from the trail.

Hiking back down the trail after lunch I was impressed by some old trail blazes, and then I spotted an old sign. This old trail sign was left from the days when the Forest Service used porcelainized signs, and despite being vandalized by gun toting idiots I could make out that it once said 'Bingham Ridge Way'. I believe that this Independence Rock Trail is a segment of what was once a 6½ mile trail leading from the Marion Forks Guard Station to the Skyline Trail. Probably what is now called the Bingham Ridge Trail is what is left of the upper part of this older trail.
