Location  Upper Metolius Backpack - Day 1

Where:  Deschutes National Forest

This trip started out to be a backpack down the length of the Klickitat Trail in Washington. At the last minute that plan got scuttled, which is another story, and I came up with the Metolius River as a substitute. It's a favorite of mine and I love returning to this magical place.

starting at Camp Sherman

Our group was made up of five, beside Jeanette and I, Dan Lawry, Dorald Stoltz, and Becky Richardson. We began our tip from Camp Sherman, hiking down river on the West Metolius Trail to the Allingham Bridge, where we crossed and took the East Metolius Trail through Smiling River, Pine Rest, and Gorge Campgrounds and on to Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery.

West Metolius Trail

Along the way I got some good photos of Warted Giant Puffball, Western Peony, and American Dipper.

Coffee Break at Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery

After a coffee break and conversation with the crew at the hatchery we continued down river on the West Metolius Trail to a nice flat area for our first night's camp.
