Common Name:Woodpecker, Pileated
Scientific Name:Dryocopus pileatus
Family:Picidae
Area:River Road - Elkton, Oregon
Date:March 22, 2011

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America. They became scarce with the clearing of forest, but now appear to be making a comeback and are seen in urban settings more and more. In all three photos the red forehead and mustache indicate they are males. The middle photo is of a juvenile that the crest is not full developed.
