Common Name:Rattlesnake, Northern Pacific
Scientific Name:Crotalus viridis oreganus
Area:Klickitat Trail, Washington
Date:April 27, 2003

The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake is our area's subspecies of the Western Rattlesnake. This is the only poisonous snake of the Pacific Northwest. As a young lad I considered it 'macho' to kill every one I found. Now I have learned that if I leave them alone, which is what they prefer, they will leave me alone.
