Trip Journal - 8/6/07, 8/9/2009
Notes:Enchanted Valley is amazingly remote and wild for being so close to the busy coastal town of Florence. Once a dairy pastureland, it was acquired by the Siuslaw National Forest through a land exchange in 1991. There is absolutely no signage to identify the trailhead. Your only clue besides a small paved parking lot is this locked gate. To hike here, walk around the gate and follow the old road up through Enchanted Valley. It's about a mile and a half to the end of the open meadow. If you are more adventurous, continue on for another mile to an old homestead orchard. However, to reach this old orchard will require some bushwhacking and a stream crossing. Come expecting some great birding watching and maybe some elk sightings.
Route:From Florence take Highway 101 north for 5 miles, turning right on Mercer Lake Road. Follow this paved but twisting road along the lakeshore to Twin Fawn Drive. Park in the parking lot at the end of the road.
