Location  North Fork Smith Trail Hike

Where:  Siuslaw National Forest

I had been giving some thought to exploring the North Fork Smith River Trail for some time, and Saturday turned out to be the day. It was a pretty drive up the Smith River and then up the North Fork. The roads were not well marked and it took some guesswork, but eventually we ended up at the secluded trailhead.

This turned out to be a very pleasant trail that took us through beautiful old growth coastal forest.

The route crossed the North Fork Smith River several times, as well as numerous side streams, all on well-constructed bridges.

The thick vegetation was made up of a wide variety of fir, maple and alder trees. Bright colors of fall were just beginning to show their best.

On this day we hiked to about the 4-mile point of the total 8.5 miles before turning around. We plan on definitely returning to hike more of the North Fork Smith River Trail.
