Location  Klickitat Trail Hike

Where:  Lyle to Fisher Hill Bridge

The weather forecast for the Willamette Valley was for rain, so in a quest for sunshine, Jeanette and I headed for the east end of the Columbia River Gorge. We were not disappointed. Once past Dog Mountain, the skies cleared and we enjoyed sunshine the rest of the day.

We chose to start the day with hiking the very first section of the Klickitat Trail from the town of Lyle to the Fisher Hill Bridge.

The Klickitat Trail is located on an abandoned railroad bed, so at first seemed a little boring, but we were soon caught up in the beauty of the river and the bird life. A covey of Quail scuttled out of site, Scrub Jays were busy in the oaks, Robins searched the greening grass and Northern Flickers let out their tell tale call. Then we spotted Bald Eagles soaring above the canyon, a total of five riding the thermals. We almost stepped on some tiny Gold Stars, our first of the season.

After returning to the trailhead in Lyle, we drove to Rowland Lake to enjoy our lunch and then rambled around Catherine Creek area for a while, totally mesmerized by the carpet of Grass Widows, whose delicate satin blossoms shimmered in the sunshine.
