Location  Cascade Head Work Party

Where:  Cascade Head

Hiking in the cascades was pretty much out of the question with the huge 'B and B Complex Fire' roaring away, so I selected Cascade Head for Jeanette and I to get in a good hike and spend the day together. Arriving at the parking lot we were greeted not only with coastal mist, but volunteers who were queuing up for The Nature Conservancy's work party. Being members and having volunteered on a number of parties at preserves all over the state we were in instant agreement to pitch in and do our part. After a brief orientation we picked up gloves and tools and headed up the trail. Along the way we also picked up some lumber to pack in for use in step construction along the trail.

Cascade Head is a favorite destination of mine, the trail contains a great diversity as it leaves coastal pasture land, climbs up through old growth Sitka Spruce, through gullies of thick Salmon Berry and Red Alder and out on to the grassy headland with its magnificent view. This is a preserve held by The Nature Conservancy, and our goal for the day was to work on removing Himalayan Blackberry vines. Debbie Pickering, Coast Ecologist, for the TNC outlined the worksite and showed us the difference between Himalayan, Evergreen and the native blackberries.
