Date: October 15, 2002 | Location South Peak Hike | Where: Sweet Home Ranger District, Willamette National Forest | Ralph Nafzinger put this trip together, and was accompanied by Mary Coleman, Dave Carter, Pam Ewing, Sharon Wright and myself. It was a trip that Ralph, Mary, and I had dreamed of doing since a trip last year to North Peak in this same area. There are five peaks all grouped together in the Echo Mountain area; Iron Mountain, Cone Peak, South Peak, Echo Mountain, and North Peak. The bare, alpine, south facing slopes of each of these peaks are irresistible to the adventuresome explorer. We started our assault on the Cone Peak Trail, but with no actual trail to South Peak, we selected a route that involved a partial climb of Cone Peak, then a traverse around the south side of Cone to the narrow ridge that connects South Peak. Once on that ridge we found the way easy going, the views fantastic and we were soon on the top of South Peak. Statistics for the day: cumulative climb 2100 ft., time 5 hours.
