Where:  Russian & Marble Mt. Wilderness - Klamath National Forest

Paynes Lake to Shelly Meadows - 16.6 miles - - Awoke feeling strong around 5:10am. In the dim light of dawn, stuffed sleeping bag and tent, took down the food bag and 6:00 when the sun came up I was eating breakfast. By 6:30 am on the trail. Stop and fill my second water bottle as water is to be scarce. I feel like I have found my stride today. The joy is there. The scenery is magnificent. I stop to gaze. Maybe because I'm on my own. John and Irv are still in camp and I can stop to gaze without the pressure of keeping up. Added on July 23 - - to go back and capture some of the day. Enjoyed hiking above Taylor & Smith Lakes. Quite spectacular scenery, break over a beautiful sagebrush ridge. Bomb across the highway at Etna Pass and start up the other side. Strange to see a highway. John and I have lunch in the shade, and then it becomes a long afternoon. We end up going further than John anticipated as no camping sites. We found water once. It was an endless open hot south slope. Did see some Red-tailed Hawks. Total Miles 30.7
