from Foster to Paynes Lake - 9 miles - - Start out in a little better spirits. Up at 5:40am. A warm breeze is blowing. I'm the first on the trail, and the morning coolness helps. We knock off the miles with the occasional snowbank slowing us down. We have 6 miles in by 11:30 when we stop for lunch. The afternoon is a hot slug. I have put on a second liner sock to help out the boot. I think last year in the Wallowa Mountains I used two heavy socks, which I should have done as blisters are a problem. I am dragging up the rear by the time we get to Paynes Lake. We all go for a swim first thing to cool down. I think the heat bothers me the most. I have yet to be able to get in touch with the excitement of adventure or to be awed by the scenery. Spend the afternoon relaxing at Paynes Lake. Its a beautiful lake and small trout are feeding next to shore. Tomorrow is supposed to be a harder day, somehow, I've got to toughen up. Total Miles 14.1
