Location  Hiking the Dellenback Trail

Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

My story goes something like this-----'Dear Diary, I am sorry to have neglected you for so long, but your younger sibling, Blog Spot, has taken up most of my time'. It's true, I haven't posted a Trip Journal since July, and posting to the Blog seems a little easier in that it's for the most part just daily trivia not a hike or event of importance. Today however, I got back on track, did a hike on the John Dellenback Dunes Trail and took enough photos to have some material.

me at the Trailhead

We just started a road trip that will take us down into Northern California. We left Elkton late morning and stopped in Reedsport for lunch. It was a glorious sunny afternoon and with no destination in mind for the night we began thinking of stopping early to have time to hike in the sun. As we were driving down Hwy 101 we notice a sign for Eel Creek Campground, 'Hey let's check it out'. It was open, and lots of choices for sites as no one else were there. We picked a sunny site, set up, grabbed our birding gear and set off to explore the campground and trails.

Buster in the dunes

Our dog Buster always likes the sand dunes. He can kick it into high gear and run until his heart's content. Up and down hill, in circles, it's great fun.

Douglas Squirrel with a fir cone

Besides sand dunes there is an impressive amount of coastal flora. Beautiful Hairy Manzanita, purple Evergreen Huckleberries, and lush Salal crowd the trail. We did get to see a good number of birds, but the most fun was this Douglas Squirrel eating this fir cone like a piece of corn-on-the-cob.
