Date: April 7, 2010 | Location Brice Creek Trail Survey | Where: Cottage Grove Ranger District, Umpqua National Forest | This is the first of a number of trail surveys I have volunteered to do for the Cottage Grove Ranger District. What I will be doing is surveying the trails for downed trees, drainage issues, and brush encroachment. Melissa Swain, Recreation Technician for the district, has given me a prioritized list of the 19 trails, and the number one trail is the Brice Creek Trail so off I went.
| | Jim getting ready to start at Lund Park Trailhead I had Jeanette drop me off at the Lund Park Trailhead, so that I could thru-hike the four miles to the West Trailhead. Jeanette then drove to the West Trailhead, parked the car and hiked East on the Brice Creek Trail.
| | Jim making GPS location waypoint I found nine locations that needed work. I marked the locations with GPS coordinates, took photos, and made notes that I will e-mail to Melissa. Because of the density of the forest, I lost satellite coverage several times, causing me to only be able to make GPS coordinates for six of the nine locations.
| | Jeanette climbing over downed tree Some of the needed repairs were minor, but as you can see from the photo, some will require some chainsaw work. I expected that Jeanette and I would meet some place close to the Cedar Creek Trailhead where we could have lunch in the campground. It all went according to plan and we enjoyed lunch at a picnic bench in the sun, and then hiked back to the car.
