Picacho Peak sticks out of the Arizona desert to a height of 3,374 feet. There are a several trails along its flank and one to its summit. We picked a moderate section of the Sunset Vista Trail on the southwest side.

trailhead in early morning light We made an early start for the day, as the tempatures are flirting with 80 here daily. In fact the sun had not hit the trailhead area at 8:00AM. It wasn't long until the sun found us and we started shedding layers.

Buster is always on the look out for anything that moves It was a great time of year to be on the trail, the ground was a carpet of green in every direction. Desert Gold Poppies blanketed some areas, looking like yellow meadows. Cactus Wrens and Curved-bill Thrashers continually kept up their chatter from atop towering Saguaro cactus.
