Location Hiking the Buckskin Trails |
Where: Buckskin Mountain State Park, Arizona |
Friends Dad & Charlene Lawry from Sisters Oregon are staying a few days with us at Buckskin Mountain State Park. Because the weather forecast was for rain on Monday we took them on a driving tour of the area making a loop up to Parker Dam and down to Parker and back to the park. Jeanette worked in the afternoon and I took them and our dogs on a walk along the river. For Tuesday we were all set for a good hike. It was overcast, but we took off with high hopes around 8:30AM.

We did the Lightning Bolt Trail first. I stopped for a nice photo of a fruiting Pin Cushion Cactus. I was totally surprised because I have hiked this trail since November and have never notice this cactus before. We next took off on the Buckskin Trail with increasing clouds. I had assured Charlene earlier that it would have not rain. Big mistake, it started raining. We tried to all fit in a small cave, but gave up and just kept hiking. Luckily the rain passed shortly.

Next we did the Interruption Point Trail. No rain, but lots of wind. Our last trail was the Abandoned Mines Trail. We stopped for a snack and then explored several of the mines. I showed Dan the mine that I had taken shelter in when I got caught by the big rain and hailstorm on Sunday afternoon while working on the trails. We still had some energy so hiked a ways more out into the desert, enough so that by the time we got back we had hiked five and a half miles.
