Location Cibola Refuge Birding |
Where: Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, Arizona |
For some fun on our day off we decided to explore Cibola National Wildlife Refuge. We drove south to Parker, down through the alfalfa fields of Poston, through Ehrenberg, then turned south at Blythe to the refuge headquarters. At the Visitors Center we got directions for the driving tour and the nature trail and took off to have our lunch at the trailhead of the nature trail.

trailhead lunch After lunch we walked the Cornfield Nature Trail which loops around a large planting of beautiful Freemount Cottonwoods.

Cornfield Nature Trail We stopped at a viewing platform where we could see hundreds of Canada Geese, Snow Geese, American Coots, and Northern Pintails. We were puzzled at a goose with the Snow Geese that had a brown body. After a closer look at the birding guide we came to the conclusion that we were seeing a blue morph of the Snow Goose.

viewing platform When we looped back on the trail to the car we were treated to the site of three Mule Deer. Back at the car we continued the car tour route and saw numerous Sandhill Cranes, American Kestrels, Red-winged Blackbirds, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and Say's Phoebes. The most interesting site was a Coyote who was also watching the Sandhill Cranes feeding in a corn field. |
