Location Tahkenitch Dunes Loop |
Where: Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area |
The weather forecast for a dry day on Wednesday prompted us to choose it for a hiking day. Friends Michael and Melissa Garguilo and their dog Jess joined us on this trip to the Tahkenitch Dunes in the Oregon Dunes National Area, north of Reedsport.

start of the trail My idea was to make another attempt at a cross-country loop that I had started to try in July, but had to abandon due to fog. The idea was to start on the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail, then head off cross-country across the dunes and catch the Tahkenitch Creek Trail, take it to the junction, then loop back on the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail.

in the dunes We had a clear day and I could see landmarks to set a course across the dunes. The sand was wet from the previous days of rain and made for a good firm surface to walk on. We saw lots of tracks out in the dunes, deer and even bear.

at Tahkenitch Creek We did hit the Tahkenitch Creek Trail on target, and after a lunch break continued on to the junction and the Tahkenitch Creek viewpoint and then back to the trailhead. We all enjoyed the day, particularly Jess and Buster who had to work out who was in charge. |
