Location  Brice Creek Trail Hike #2

Where:  Cottage Grove Ranger District, Umpqua National Forest

I'm hot on hiking the Brice Creek Trail right now, so we returned this week to hike a second section, starting at the Cedar Creek Trailhead, and hiking to the Lund Park Trailhead and back. Out and back it's a five-mile hike. Rain was threatening so two people canceled, but Joan Smith came along with Jeanette, Buster and me.

Cool tempatures had us start off with a brisk pace to get warm. Crossing the bridge we turned right and took the trail upstream past numerous small waterfalls and through towering old growth Douglas fir trees. We had a quick lunch at Lund Park before retracing our steps back to Cedar Creek.

This section of the trail has some of the best access to the river. We were surprised to find that the river had dropped considerably in height from last week and the water to be crystal clear.

After last weeks hike, wild flowers were on my mind, and we were not disappointed. Bright Trilliums and Fawn Lilies are at their peak and most numerous. Spring Queen and yellow Violets continue. Harder to spot were the delicate pink Calypso Orchids, also commonly known as Lady Slippers. Searching the sunny rock cliffs next to the trail revealed tiny Chickweed Monkey Flowers.
