Location  Butterfly Lake Hike

Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Over morning coffee Jeanette and I decided to take advantage of the forecasted sunshine and warm tempatures at the coast. Making another try to find Butterfly Lake sounded like a good idea. Our first attempt some weeks ago was a complete fiasco and did not even make the Trip Journal. We had attempted to find the lake coming in from the southeast off of the Three Mile Lake Trail. Today's attempt would be from the northwest through the more open sand dunes with the aid of satellite photos as well as using my GPS.

Using the satellite photos, we were able to find our route through the open dunes and alongside of the timbered areas. Keeping an eye on the GPS further assured us of our proximity to the lake.

As we got very close we also spotted vinyl tape that indicated a probably route. We came upon Butterfly Lake deep down in a depression, completely surrounded with steep banks, brush and trees. After a little exploring, and some lunch we found our way back.

I love hiking in the sunshine in the winter. It is good medicine for the soul, and some how feel I have cheated the system.
