Location  Threemile Lake Hike

Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Our goal for the day was to escape from the 100-degree temperatures of the inland valleys and spend the day hiking at the Oregon Coast. We settled on hiking to Threemile Lake, one of the closer destinations from our home in Elkton. Sixty-degree temps made for enjoyable hiking.

We started at the trailhead at the Tahkenitch Campground, and took the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail to the beach to Threemile Lake, and then looped back to the trailhead on the Threemile Lake Trail. One of the biggest problems with this loop route in the last couple of years has been the lack of easy access to the beach. Continue erosion by Tahkenitch Creek has washed away the last section of trail leading to the beach. We were pleased to find that there is now a new flagged trail winding through the shore pines to the beach.

We took a lunch break on the beach, and then took another longer break at Threemile Lake trying to burn up as much time as we could before returning to the hot temperatures at home.
