Location  Eagle Cap Wilderness Backpack - Day 5

Where:  West Fork Wallowa River to Ice Lake

Another great breakfast of pancakes fuels me for the steady climb to Ice Lake. Breaks for breathers with the pack off always revive and are many, and are filled in with water and snacks. The flora is quite varied on the sun-baked southeast slope.

Pictures and descriptions do not come close to describing the beauty of Ice Lake. It's size and variety is more than I expected.

We make camp on the peninsula with some shelter from the wind, which is blowing pretty hard.

I find great success in fishing around on the other side near the inlet by making long casts and letting the line and fly sink a long time. I pulled up five nice brook trout 9-10 ½ inches on a damsel fly imitation. I felt like I was fishing in Alaska with the brush, beach, and solitude.

Statistics for the day:
Distance : 5.5 miles
Climb : 2349 feet
Time : 8:30 - 11:30
