Location  Eagle Cap Wilderness Backpack - Day 1

Where:  West Fork Wallowa River

This is a Chemeketan Backpack led by Pete Anderson and Betsy Belshaw. Also attending are John Stolting, Darcy Brownlee, Andy Hershtom, and myself. Pete, Betsy, John and I all leave Salem at 6:00AM, have lunch at Island City, and arrive at the trailhead above Wallowa Lake at 2:00. Darcy and Andy meet us there a little later and we are on the trail by 3:30.

It's a warm afternoon, and in no time the sweat is rolling. The trail is much prettier that I expected and not the look of over-use that I anticipated.

We hike on past the Ice Lake Junction about ¾ of a mile to the first possible campsite next to the river.

Water boils while I set up my tent. I dine on cream of chicken soup and freeze dried 'Hearty Beef Stew'.

Statistics for the day:
Distance 3.8 miles
Climb - 1015 feet
Time - 3:30 - 5:30
