 Sunday - Jeanette writes

Today is Sunday. We didn't write last night - we kind of got off schedule.

We slept at a beautiful youth hostel in Cambria near San Simeon. (Had to lie about our ages :o) :o) We will go to - or past San Louis Obispo today.

There was a wonderful tail wind yesterday that helped us fly down the road. The most interesting thing that we saw were elephant seals on the beach very close to the road. They make loud burping noises and some of the males were fighting and biting each other. The others lay on the beach and constantly threw flippers of sand up over their bodies.

The beautiful coastline has changed to rather flat. We are informed by our guidebook that we will mostly be in metropolitan areas, not much wilderness left on the southern coast.

I added up the miles to the border again - 400+ and now I think that we could be done by next Sunday or Monday. We'll have to see how metropolitan riding compares for speed with where we've been so far.

The first 10-12 miles this morning came close to my ideal fantasy of bicycle touring. We rode effortlessly along Highway 1 with the morning sun just peeking over the hills. Our lite breakfast of banana and raisin toast were just enough to fuel the legs. Now we are in Cayucos - we have encountered some pea soup fog and our glasses steam up so fast we can barely see the road signs. When all else fails bicyclists eat!! So we are splitting a breakfast special - a seafood omlette - and hoping that the sun will melt a hole in the fog so we can venture forth.
