 Saturday - Jim writes

Yesterday (Friday), we got to meet Bunni in person. We had met in a way six months ago on the Internet. While looking through bicycle related sites on my computer I came across pieces of her story about her bicycle tour across the southern US with the interesting sub title "Batty Old Broads On Bicycles". She writes extremely well and Jeanette and I enjoyed reading about her journey so much that we sent her e-mail expressing our appreciation. Over the following months we have sent and received many e-mails to the point that we decided to include Santa Rosa in our itinerary.

So yesterday Bunni rode north as we rode south from Ukiah meeting in the shaded central plaza of Healdsburg.

Bunni had graciously offered her home for us to stay and has served as our guide and hostess the for the last two days, leading us to her home where we spent a very enjoyable evening exchanging tails of the road, pouring over maps and discussing routes. Besides feeding us very well she took the time to lead us out of Santa Rosa this morning. We road west through Sebastopol, up over the steepest hill of the trip so far and then flew down the hill to Freestone. The most happening place in Freestone was the bakery and we soon discovered why. I bought a loaf of the "sticky bun" French bread and the three of us ate the whole thing right on the spot.

Bunni led us on to 101 where we said our good bys before she turned back to Santa Rosa. We continued on to the next town, Tomales where we took a break--had lunch, checked e-mail, and sent film off for developing. Arriving at Tomales Bay I was quite struck by the fact that where we stood you could see no sign of human habitation out side of the road we were traveling on. The bay looked, as it must have to the early Spanish explorers.

California has such great contrasts. We continued along Tomales Bay winding, climbing and descending until we thought it would never end. Then we finally reached Point Reyes Station. From there it was a couple of easy miles to our campsite at Olema Ranch Camp Ground.

Tomorrow: Ed & Sally guide us into San Francisco
