"Last night while camped at our R/V park in Crescent City we were serenaded by the roar of the ocean in the distance and the mournful call of the foghorn from a buoy. Then above that back ground we heard sea lions barking. We both turned and ginned.

As many of you probably know, sea lions and harbor seals have only recently, due to federal protection, become numerous enough to be seen and heard again along the Pacific coast. I went to sleep feeling good about the progress we have made in living in harmony with our environment.

Later we were awakened by more barking. Boisterous little devils. Then again. In fact about every hour there would be an outbreak of barking.

In the morning as we cycled out of the R/V park we were surprised to discover that our camp ground was right next to a huge sea aquarium! Could it be that our barking sea lions were residents of the aquarium?

Once out of town we began almost immediately climbing up through the redwoods. We huffed & puffed hoping to see the 1200 ft summit. At last I saw a sign-- "Do Not Pass". I have been unable to locate the name of that pass on the map.

All jokes aside we have had a great day today. Winding through the redwoods, along scenic lagoons, climbing long steep grades, swooping down the other side effortlessly. We're satisfied with our mileage today, 60 miles. Puzzled, that some of our 30-mile days seemed just as hard.

PS We passed the halfway point today."
