"Michael & Anni O'Shaugden led us out of Eugene this morning on their recumbent tandem. They are a smooth, strong team and familiar with the network of bicycle paths to old 99 and Goshen. Anni had to turn back for work, so the adventure is now ours alone. We'll have no more guides until we are near San Francisco.
Fall has arrived. Filberts litter orchard floors, ready to be swept into wooden totes. Blackberries arch from fence rows and ditches, fruit withered from afternoons in the sun. Volunteer apples and plums lay beneath trees as yellowjackets take their fill. Yellow deciduous and green fir trees color the hills in an autumn patchwork.
Our eyes, ears and noses are alert for the impressions du jour. (The audience waits!)
Jim wondered out loud this morning, "Who do you think enjoys our Email the most, them or us?" Easy answer.... WE DO. You have - maybe five minutes of reading. We have a whole day of riding, registering, composing, writing, editing, sending and receiving.
Unlike Sunday, today is neither warm nor quiet. Clouds have obscured the sun. The wind is cool and in our face. We had a 7-mile sprint on the wide shoulder of Interstate 5 - dodging retread shreds and roadside trash as trucks roared by sucking us along in a 21 mph slipstream. THAT was NOISY!
Now we have settled into the Elkton RV Park. Our tent is pitched, table set, tea brewed and Jim is at the grocery store buying dinner as I hold down the Pocket Mail assignment.
I'll scan our tiny radio for a weather report (as if it matters.) Warm or cool, wet or dry, tomorrow we continue 37 miles west to Reedsport and then south along the Pacific shore."
