 Update from Jim & Jeanette

We have been rather busy beavers here getting caught up; unpacking our gear, mowing the lawn, paying the bills, mounting some new bicycle tires, scrutinizing every article of clothing, discarding some, and adding others, and repackaging everything in our panniers. In fact Jeanette's bike now sports some brand new high tech vauDe rear panniers, and we have jettisoned our front handle bar bags. Everything has been weighed and we feel that we are now better equipped for cold weather with less weight!

We have received several inquires asking if we are continuing on to the
Mexican border. The answer is yes! It may have sounded in the last e-mail as if we were calling it quits, but we are still on our original game plan, which was to spend several days here in Salem to be able to attend our niece's wedding on Oct. 2nd.

To be perfectly honest, I had some fear that when we stopped in Salem we would be tempted to say, "enough is enough". But we found ourselves immediately making preparations for the next phase. Our first two weeks took us some 650 miles through Washington, Canada, and Oregon. In our second phase we will continue down the coast of Oregon and California to the Mexican boarder, which is 1300 miles.

Our present plan calls for us to roll out of Salem on Monday, Oct 4th, riding to Eugene where we will spend the night with son Michael. The next day, friends Michael and Annie will join us on their new recumbent tandem and show us the way out of Eugene. We plan to ride through Cottage Grove, turning at Drain then along the Umpqua River to the coast.

We will keep you posted via Pocket Mail and hopefully have some new entertaining adventures to report.
