Location  Calico Ghost Town

Where:  Barstow, California

Calico, once a thriving mining town, turned ghost town, was purchased in the 1950's by Mr. Knott of Knott's Berry Farm. He oversaw its restoration and eventually donated it to San Bernardino County. We discovered Calico in researching campgrounds for staying in our motor home, and the modest camping fee included free admission to the town. We arrived in late afternoon to an almost empty campground, which lies hidden away in a canyon just below the town.

After setting up we took off to find the town. Walking in from the campground, we sort of came in the back door, and wandered around seeing the many old buildings and machinery in the last rays of sunshine.

The next morning, at the suggestion of the train engineer, we had a big breakfast at the Calico House before setting out to explore more of the town. One thing we had missed the previous night was the real 'entrance'. We also found the old cemetery, and the restored schoolhouse.

We highly recommend Calico as a place to visit. We found the town intriguing, as well as the surrounding area of canyons which hold fascinating rock formations, and old mining tunnels.
