I joined with the Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club from Roseburg for this hike of the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail to the ocean, looping back on the Threemile Lake Trail. Rain was our constant companion of the day.

The route through the dunes went fine, but we discovered that Tahkenitch Creek had rerouted itself this winter and completely taken out the section of trail for access to the beach. We were left to beating our way through thick salal, scotch broom, sitka spruce and shore pine in what turned out to be an ordeal in order to get to the beach.

Once we gained the beach it was a simple hike south on the sand to the trail to Threemile Lake. We took a quick lunch break at a campsite, and then a pleasant hike through the forest back to the parking lot.
