Location  Threemile Lake Hike

Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The weather forecast had been for rain, rain, and rain, and I had planned on spending Monday cloistered in the den on the computer. However, the updated morning forecast promised a dry day. So when over coffee at the local café, Ed posed the question, 'what are we going to do today?' I was caught without a plan to fit the day. After Ed's instance that we should probably take advantage of the day, I came up with the idea of hiking the trail to Threemile Lake.

The Threemile Lake Trail is a winner year around. Sandy soils, covered with fir needles and rhododendron leaves makes for a good surface even in wet weather. Colorful Fly Amanita mushrooms were still hanging on and made good photo subjects.

We enjoyed a full day of sunshine, pausing at the lake for lunch. My original plan was to simply hike to the lake and back, but after lunch with a beautiful beach beckoning to us, I suggested making a loop up the beach and back on the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail. The wind was at our back, Buster loved running on the beach, and we were able to find the return trail.
