Location  Tahkenitch Dunes & Threemile Lake Hike

Where:  Siuslaw National Forest

For our second day of hiking on the Oregon Coast I chose a loop hike to Threemile Lake made up of the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail and the Three Mile Lake Trail, starting at the Tahkenitch Campground. After a night of rain we were pleased to be able to start our hike with blue skies. Once again we were impressed by the abundance of Evergreen Huckleberries. They grow so thick here that they are trimmed back from the trail leaving an almost solid hedge.

We hiked through the dunes and out to beach on the ocean, then hiked south on the beach until we found the trail to Three Mile Lake. Hiking through the dunes to the lake we spotted bear prints in the sand, adding to lots of deer prints and raccoon prints we had already seen.

Perched on the sand dunes above the lake we enjoyed our lunch and the view of the lake. We took the Three Mile Lake Trail back, which took us through an amazing beautiful forest with mushrooms beyond anything we could imagine. I was able to get good photos of Red Coral mushrooms. A rest stop sitting on a bench overlooking Elbow Lake capped the day.
