Date: September 17, 2004 | Location Judge Waldo Hike | Where: Waldo Lake, Willamette National Forest | The Willamette National Forest's second Heritage Hike in the Judge Waldo series took place, appropriately enough, at Waldo Lake. Judge John Breckenridge Waldo spent the summers of 1877 through 1907 camping, exploring, and enjoying the High Cascades of Oregon, with many trips to Waldo Lake, which bears his name. The four-mile hike, organized and led by Carol Winkler, Archeologist for the Middle Fork District, was along the soth end of Waldo Lake on the Waldo Lake Trail.
| | Camp Edith Inscription Tree Our most interesting stop was at Camp Edith, and the opportunity to see the very old inscription. Judge Waldo on August 27, 1889 wrote---- 'Bert and Arthur named the camp at the Lake and left it inscribed on a mountain hemlock tree, CAMP EDITH, WALDO LAKE'.
| | Cy Bingham Inscription Tree Further along the trail Carol pointed out the Cy Bingham Tree. Cy Bingham was the first Forest Ranger in the Cascades and inscribed his name on many trees, this one in 1904.
| | South Waldo Shelter Our welcomed lunch stop on this winter-like day was at the South Waldo Shelter, where Tom demonstrated building a fire using only lichen as a fire-starter.
