Location  Island Jct Shelter Ski - Day 1

Where:  Ray Benson Sno-Park

This is our much anticipated over-night trip, staying in the Island Junction Shelter. There has been no fresh snow so we are expecting icy conditions. However, it just starts to snow when we arrive at the parking lot-----so we ski on fresh snow.

As we ski along the trail we pass some scouts, they are headed for the Brandenburg Shelter----boy are we lucky!

Jeanette & Jim on the trail to Island Jct Shelter

We have the shelter to ourselves when we arrive, and because it has been snowing all the way in, a fire and some drying out sounds good. Soon two other skiers join us. We are enjoying lunch and talking when four guys and three dogs appear. By the time another couple arrive I want out of there! It has stopped snowing so we take off on a tour to Island Lake. The snowmobiles on the trail have made a swath wide enough for us to snow plow for some control down to the lake. At the Junction with the main road we decide to ski on around Link Lake. Snowmobiles have not make it clear around because of thawed areas.

Back at the shelter we are greeted by a lone skier having a late lunch. He has been up on Mt Washington. He normally skis 20 miles a trip! We fuss around and melt some snow to treat ourselves to hot soup, followed later by dinner of Tuna Helper. After dinner four skiers show up, they are out night skiing from their campsite at Twin Buttes. Turn in at 8:00PM
