Location  Steens Mountain Backpack - Day 2

Where:  Little Blitzen Gorge

Day 2 began by hiking past an old cabin site with a rhubarb patch, which the previous evening Aunt Rachel had used to make a rhubarb cobbler.

We continued hiking deeper into the Little Blitzen Gorge, stopping in a grove of Mountain Mahogany. After a fruitless search for a better campsite we all crowded in using whatever space we could find. Flat ground is very scarce at this upper end of the gorge.

The afternoon was used to explore, play in the river and play cards. The biggest thrill of the day came when an F15 fighter jet roared up the gorge close overhead, turning and twisting to make the tight confinement of the canyon walls. In the evening I was able to get a good photo of Nuttall's Linanthus.
