Flower: | Gorse | Family: | Pea | Genus / Species: | Ulex europaea - | Notes: | Gorse begins blooming in January. Dispite its pretty flower it growns into a dense hedge with sharp spines. Because of its high oil content it is very flammable, and is thought to be responsible for the Bandon Fire of 1936. Gorse was introduced as an ornamental in the late 1800s from Europe. It has spread all along the Pacific Coast line, and is now a noxious weed. | Photo: |
