Common Name: | Finch, Purple | Scientific Name: | Carpodacus purpureus | Family: | Fringillidae | Area: | Elkton, Oregon | Date: | December 24, 2011 |
Purple Finches are not actually purple, but more of a rose color. They are hard to distinguish from the more common House Finch, but here are some clues: the females are the easiest, with the female Purple Finch having sharp white eyebrows that the House Finch does not have. On the males, the Purple Finch is more uniformly washed in red all over head and back and chest. The House Finches' red is broken up and has more distinct brown breast stripes. |
