Common Name: | Woodpecker, Pileated | Scientific Name: | Dryocopus pileatus | Family: | Picidae | Area: | River Road - Elkton, Oregon | Date: | March 22, 2011 |
The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America. They became scarce with the clearing of forest, but now appear to be making a comeback and are seen in urban settings more and more. In all three photos the red forehead and mustache indicate they are males. The middle photo is of a juvenile that the crest is not full developed. |
