Downy Woodpeckers are the smallest of the Woodpecker Family. They look very similar to the Hairy Woodpecker so you have to look very closely. The Downy is smaller with a much smaller bill in proportion to the body. A male is shown in the upper photo with the bright red patch. A female is in the second photo with out the red patch.
