Common Name: | Dove, Eurasian Collared- | Scientific Name: | Streptopelia decaocto | Family: | Columbidae | Area: | Furnace Creek Campground - Death Valley, California | Date: | January 19, 2009 |
The Eurasian Collared Dove is thought to have orginated in Africa and brought to Europe in the 1930s. It was imported to the Bahamas in the 70s, by the 80s it had spread to Florida, by the 90s to Texas, and has now spread to the West Coast and up through California and Oregon. It is a couple of inches larger than our native Mourning Dove, which it is replacing due to it's more aggressive behavior and prolific breeding. |
