Common Name:Grouse, Ruffed
Scientific Name:Bonasa umbellus
Family:Phasianidae
Area:Sweet Home Ranger District, Willamette National Forest
Date:June 26, 2008

We came upon this Ruffed Grouse in the middle of the road, and were perplexed as to why it had its feathers so 'ruffled' until we spotted the chicks on either side of the road, and then understood it was a mother's protective display.
