Common Name:Toad, Western
Scientific Name:Bufo boreas boreas
Area:Sparks Lake, Deschutes National Forest
Date:August 23, 2004

The Western Toad is our only toad here in the Northwest. Toads are distinguished from frogs by their warty skin, and sluggish movement (walking rather than hoping), and parotoid glands behind the eyes. These bulbous protrusions exude a thick, white, nauseating, burning poison. - - - photo by Wayne Wallace
