Title: | Balfour-Klickitat Trail | Area: | Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area | Elevation: | 120 Feet | Misc: | There are many Osage Orange trees on the property. | Links: | Columbia River Gorge NSA Trails, LyleCommunity Website, Lyle Hotel | Notes: | The Balfour-Klickitat Day Use Area is part of 357 acres purchased by the Forest Service in 1994 at the mouth of the Klickitat River. Sir Thomas Balfour ran an extensive agricultural operation here in the 1890s, but all is gone now. The Forest Service has recently put in paved parking and trails, a restroom and fencing, making a wonderful area to spend some time in. It is an excellent area to enjoy birds. You can expect to see ducks, geese, and herons along the Klickitat River. Looking into the sky you will probably spot Bald Eagles, Red Tail Hawks, and Vultures, and in the oak trees you will see many Scrub Jays, some Red-shafted Flickers and if lucky a Lewis' Woodpecker. | Alt_trail: | If you are looking for a longer hike, combine this with a section of the Klickitat Trail on the other side of the Klickitat River, or drive up the road a piece to Catherine Creek | Distance: | 0.8 | USGS_75: | Lyle |
